Former Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar Ismail: court investigation and asset freeze over alleged bribes from Oil Ministry investors (from 2022 to 2024)

Ihsan Abdul Jabbar Ismail, a former Director General of the Basra Oil Company, became Minister of Oil in 2020 under Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and was also acting Minister of Finance from August to October 2022. On 11 September 2022 Alsumaria, citing judicial sources, reported that the Karkh investigation court for integrity cases was examining suspicions that land of the Midland Oil Company in Baghdad and land in Basra had been sold against the law on state property, and that money had been sought from foreign companies for a gas project tender at the West Qurna 2 field. In November 2022 MP Ali Turki of Parliament's Integrity Committee said he would be held to account. On 13 August 2023 the state news agency INA, citing a judicial source, reported that the same court had frozen his movable and immovable assets over the alleged exploitation of his post and receipt of bribes from investors with Oil Ministry contracts. MPs Zahra al-Bajari and Mustafa Sanad made further accusations. He has denied any wrongdoing, according to Iraq Business News citing The Economist. No charge sheet or verdict is on record.
