Data downloads
Every table on this site can be downloaded from this page. There are 69 datasets, each in two files: a CSV file, which is plain text that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or a statistics program with Arabic intact, and an Excel workbook.
Each Excel workbook has a second sheet, called "About this file". It explains in plain words what the file holds, where its data come from and what each column means. A researcher can use the files to check the site's calculations.
The money
- Audit findings on the Development Fund for Iraq
What the auditors of the New York account (DFI) reported each year.
- Where the oil money went, by year
Oil sales, oil paid to oil companies in kind, cash into the New York account, Kuwait compensation, sales to the CBI and state dollar spending.
- Central Bank dollar sales, by year
Dollars the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) sold each year through its currency window (the "auction"), from its own statistical bulletins.
- Central Bank dollar sales, by month
The same sales month by month.
- Kurdistan Region oil sales
Oil the Kurdistan Region sold outside the federal system, from its own audited reviews.
- Dollar price in the market, by month
The price of a dollar in Iraqi dinars on the open market, next to the Central Bank's own price.
- Iraq's imports as reported by its trading partners
Imports Iraq paid for compared with the exports its partners recorded, a check on over-invoicing.
- Oil exports, by month
Barrels exported and money earned each month, from official sources.
- Documented cases concerning oil
Documented cases concerning Iraqi oil: guilty pleas in bribery cases over oil contracts, the diversion and smuggling of crude oil and fuel, sanctions designations, court rulings and audit findings. Each case gives its sources and the exact legal status of the people named.
CSV, 16 KBExcel, 15 KB14 rows - Estimates of oil lost or unaccounted for before export
Published estimates of the oil that was lost or not accounted for before export, some of which their sources attribute to theft and smuggling, with their sources.
CSV, 46 KBExcel, 24 KB82 rows - Dollars the Central Bank bought from the Finance Ministry, by year
The oil dollars the Finance Ministry sold to the CBI for dinars, which the CBI then sold on at its window.
- Central Bank foreign reserves, by year
The CBI's foreign-currency reserves at year end.
- State land and licences: rulings, audit findings and accusations
Court rulings, audit findings, investigations, accusations and government decisions about investment licences, state land and state factories. The column "kind" says which each row is. A court ruling is not the same as an accusation.
CSV, 112 KBExcel, 46 KBstate_assets_findings - State land and licences: who ran the licensing bodies
Prime ministers, chairmen of the National Investment Commission and ministers who ran the bodies that grant licences and allocate state land. Being listed records a public office, not an allegation.
CSV, 17 KBExcel, 14 KBstate_assets_officials - State land and licences: figures and rules
Counts, areas and sums stated by official bodies, and the rules that govern licences and state land. What the commissions announce is licensed value, not money spent.
CSV, 30 KBExcel, 19 KBstate_assets_scale
The Ledger
- Companies that bought dollars directly
Money-transfer and exchange companies that bought dollars at the window.
- Which days the per-bank ledger covers
For each day the CBI sold dollars: whether we hold its per-bank record and whether the bank rows add up to the CBI's published daily total.
- Dollars bought by each bank, by year
The per-bank ledger: how many dollars each bank bought from the CBI each year, rebuilt from the CBI's own daily records. Coverage differs by year; see coverage_daily.
- How much of each year the per-bank ledger can name
For each year: the Central Bank's dollar sales, how much of them we can attribute to a named bank, and what survives of its per-bank records.
- The price gap, by year
The value of the gap between the market price of a dollar and the Central Bank's price, times the dollars it sold. It went to whoever received the dollars; it is not a finding that any bank or person made that money.
- The price gap, by month
The same calculation month by month, with the market price and the price paid for each month.
- Requests the Central Bank refused, 2013 to 2015
The amounts banks asked for and the amounts the CBI's committee refused, with the written reasons, from its daily minutes.
- Dollars bought by each bank, day by day
Every per-bank row we hold from the Central Bank's daily records, in one file per year. 9 years, 29,205 rows in all.
