Karkh First Education Directorate: director general sentenced to four years for demanding a USD 50,000 bribe from a school principal (2026)

On 29 March 2026 the Federal Integrity Commission said its Baghdad investigation team had arrested the director general of the Karkh First Education Directorate on a bribery charge. A school principal had complained that he was asked for money to have an investigative committee formed against him cancelled. The team caught a clerk at one of the directorate's schools as he asked for USD 50,000; the clerk said he was only an intermediary and that the money was for the director general. The Karkh second investigation judge issued an arrest and search warrant for the director general, and both men were held under Revolutionary Command Council Resolution No. 160 of 1983. On 9 June 2026 the Commission said the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court had sentenced the director general, in person, to four years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of IQD 10 million, for demanding USD 50,000 to close the committees against the principal and keep him in his post.
