Safwan border crossing with Kuwait (Basra): the director caught with a bribe (2012), fifty customs employees sent to the integrity court (2017) and a car smuggling network (2023)

Safwan is Iraq's only land crossing with Kuwait. On 31 March 2012 MP Udai Awad told a press conference in Basra that Integrity Commission investigators had caught the crossing's director with a bribe of USD 1,000 in his office a few days earlier, and that he had been arrested; the MP also said the man who reported the bribe had been jailed. In 2017 the Border Ports Directorate of the Ministry of Interior announced several referrals of Safwan customs employees to the integrity court for corruption and manipulation: eight in March 2017, when it put the total at 27, and five more in July 2017, when it said 50 had been referred and detained by the investigating judge. On 15 November 2023 the Integrity Commission said it had broken up a network that took cars below the permitted model year out of the Safwan crossing and sold them as parts, catching three suspects in the act.
