Shib border crossing with Iran (Maysan): bribery sentences for the crossing director and the customs centre director (2024), after earlier tax and bribery cases (from 2019 to 2021)

The Shib crossing in Maysan is a land crossing with Iran. In January 2019 a source in the Maysan integrity office told Alsumaria News that the integrity misdemeanour court had sentenced 12 crossing employees to prison terms, without further detail. On 3 November 2021 the Integrity Commission said its team had found that the crossing's tax unit charged 12 percent on goods instead of the legal 20 percent; the head of the unit and the cashier were detained under Article 340. On 25 May 2024 the Commission caught the director of the Shib centre receiving IQD 1.5 million, which it said was paid to let trucks with banned food and building materials through and to issue customs declarations for them. On 21 August 2024 the Supreme Judicial Council said the Maysan Criminal Court had sentenced the director of the Shib crossing to two years' rigorous imprisonment for bribery. On 15 September 2024 the Commission said the Maysan misdemeanour court for integrity cases had sentenced the director of the civil customs centre at the crossing, arrested on 25 May, to two years and an IQD 2 million fine.
