Integrity Commission field teams in the Ministry of Electricity: arrest order for former minister Karim Aftan al-Jumaili, summons for minister Qasim al-Fahdawi and a director general's conviction (from 2015 to 2018)

After the protests of summer 2015, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on 11 August 2015 told the Integrity Commission to list those accused of stealing public money. The next day the Commission formed field teams to examine suspect files in the Ministries of Electricity and Trade and the Baghdad municipality, and on 1 October its head, Hassan al-Yasiri, said they had finished. On 15 October 2015 al-Yasiri said an arrest order had been issued for former electricity minister Karim Aftan al-Jumaili, in office from October 2011, and a summons for the serving minister, Qasim al-Fahdawi, with arrest orders for some directors general. In April 2016 a Basra investigation court summoned a former electricity minister, identified only by initials, for buying a car worth IQD 230 million from investment funds. In June 2017 the Commission said a court had sentenced in absentia a former director general of the electricity transmission projects directorate over overpriced cars bought in 2014 for the minister's convoy. On 29 July 2018 al-Abadi dismissed al-Fahdawi, citing the decline of the electricity sector.
