Midland Refineries Company: Director General Aid Jaber Imran arrested and sentenced for illicit enrichment (2023)
In May 2023 Parliament's Integrity Committee questioned Aid Jaber Imran, Director General of the state-owned Midland Refineries Company, over suspected corruption at the Karbala, Najaf investment and Doura refineries. Committee member Alia Nassif asked Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to end his assignment and said more than 50 files had been sent to the Integrity Commission. On 18 September 2023 the Federal Integrity Commission said it had executed an arrest warrant from an investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court against the company's Director General for money laundering and illicit gain of IQD 7,841,605,000. It said he owned six properties in Oman and a property in central Baghdad registered to his wife, and held shares in a hotel and companies. On 29 November 2023 the commission said the court had sentenced the serving Director General in person to five years' strict imprisonment under article 19/2 of Integrity Law No. 30 of 2011, with a fine of IQD 16,035,045,000 and repayment of IQD 14,535,045,000. The commission did not name him; MPs named the Director General as Aid Jaber Imran before and after the arrest.
