Sinjar education directorate (Duhok): IQD 1.098 billion of wages for volunteer lecturers, three arrests and a former director in hiding (2020)

On 6 May 2020 the KRG Minister of Education, Alan Hama Saeed, told the Kurdistan Parliament that corruption of IQD 1.098 billion had occurred in payments for lecturers' wages in the education directorate of Duhok governorate within a single month, that the case was before the court, that one person had been arrested and that others were being investigated. KirkukNow reported on 12 May 2020 that the money had been meant for the wages of volunteer lecturers who taught Ezidi pupils from Sinjar during the displacement caused by the Islamic State, through the Sinjar education directorate, which reports to the general directorate of education in Duhok. Citing Halz Sa'id, a member of the Parliament's education committee, and a report of the Integrity Commission in Duhok, it said the former director of education, his brother and the accountant were involved; the brother, the accountant and another person had been arrested, while the former director was in hiding and was said by some to have gone abroad. None of them was named. No ruling is on record.
