What became of the project
The NIC list records licence 186/2018 of 19 March 2018 for assembly of GM and Renault cars in Babil, at a cost of IQD 9,946,000,000 (about USD 8.36 million at 1,190 dinars per dollar, our arithmetic). The completion column reads 1, which the register reads as completed (100 per cent). The company website describes a saloon-car plant with four production lines at Iskandariya. It does not name GM or Renault models. No independent report on the plant's output was found.
Other contracts with the state
The company website zamzammotors.com, which carries the Zamzam Motors name, presents the business as Zamzam Spring International (the English form of نبع زمزم الدولية) within a group it calls ZSCO (مجموعة شركات زسكو). It says the company was founded in 2013 and, in partnership with the Ministry of Industry and Minerals and its State Company for Automotive Industry, built a car factory complex of 340,000 square metres. It gives its address as Iskandariya, near Dallah. The NIC list gives Nabaa Zamzam International Ltd six further assembly licences in Babil on 4 April 2018 (see index 80). No registration document confirming the link between the two licensees, and no other government contract, was found.
