Head of the Integrity Commission, Haider Hanoun: leaked recordings, a Maysan land plot and an arrest order (2024)

In September 2024, audio recordings attributed to Haider Hanoun, acting head of the Federal Integrity Commission since November 2022, circulated; the Commission said they were not genuine. After Hanoun publicly accused an investigating judge in the "theft of the century" case, the Supreme Judicial Council on 16 September 2024 asked the Karkh Third Investigation Court to take legal action against him, including over a plot of land allocated to the Real Estate Registration Department in Maysan. On 7 October 2024 that court issued an arrest order because he had not appeared in the cases in which he was charged, and to investigate the recordings (judicial source). On 22 October 2024 the Cabinet relieved him of the post at his own request and, according to an informed source, made him an adviser at the Ministry of Justice. No later court outcome is on record.
