Green Zone anti-corruption raids: 47 officials arrested including 13 MPs and a deputy oil minister (from 28 to 29 June 2026)

On 28 and 29 June 2026 security forces sealed Baghdad's Green Zone and executed judicial arrest warrants, detaining 47 people, including 13 members of parliament (whose immunity had been lifted), Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarij al-Bahadly and Al-Azm Alliance leader Muthanna al-Samarrai, according to Al Jazeera/AP and AFP-based reports. Officials said the arrests followed confessions by detained Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili. PM al-Zaidi called it the beginning of a broader crackdown; analysts questioned whether it was selective. Several subsequent convictions for illicit enrichment (from August to September 2026) are recorded in the case Illicit-enrichment and bribery convictions of MPs and senior officials after the 2026 crackdown. The authorities did not officially name those arrested. The Iraqi News Agency, citing senior sources, published a preliminary list of 12 sitting MPs; an Integrity Commission source quoted by Al-Mada added a former MP, Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarij and Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie. The investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court ordered a precautionary seizure of the assets of 12 of them (decision 555 of 13 July 2026); the Finance Ministry passed the order on to state bodies on 27 July and the Central Bank to all banks on 28 August 2026. The letters and the list of the 12 are in the archive, the list with private details blacked out.
